AHVRP Annual Conference:  September 4- 7, 2008 – Anaheim, CA
On behalf of AHVRP and the 2008 Conference Planning Committee, welcome to the 40th Annual Meeting and Leadership Conference and Trade Show, held in conjunction with the American Hospital Association Auxilian/Volunteer Conference. The theme for this year's conference is “Accelerating Performance through Customer Service Excellence”.

The Conference Planning Committee has worked very hard to bring the theme to life in a well-designed, three-day conference. The faculty and topics to be presented have been very carefully selected. Experts in the field will present current topics that affect your daily work as administrators of volunteer programs, volunteer leaders and retail operations professionals. In keeping with the diversity of our profession, the sessions have been organized in six tracks: Leadership, Advocacy, Communication, Education, Retail Operations and Standards. You'll have a difficult time choosing which sessions to go to - the speakers are that good!

Networking with your peers is always a key component of the conference, and there will be time for the exchange of information and ideas. The Trade Show is also an important part of the conference, and you don't want to miss the show this year. Remember to thank our vendors for their support and sponsorships. The Book Store will be open throughout the conference and stocked with books and other resources mostly specific to healthcare volunteer administration and volunteerism. The Cyber Café will also be available for your convenience. The Silent Auction and the 50/50 Raffle are also popular events, and both benefit AHVRP programs.

Take advantage of all the conference has to offer!

    • If you would like to become a Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services (CAVS), the CAVS Review and Exam will be held on Thursday, September 4.
    • The Principles Course, Intensive Sessions and Luncheons will be offered Wednesday, September 3.
    • If you are attending the conference for the very first time, join us for the First-Time Attendees Meeting on Thursday, September 4.
    • You will hear from leaders in the healthcare volunteer services and retail operations professionals with dynamic presentations that will empower volunteers to meet community healthcare needs.
    • Many chances for personal and professional growth. Meet new people, share ideas, and forge new alliances! This event presents unique opportunities to share ideas and experiences with other professionals and expand your horizons.
    • More ideas and information than you can imagine! You'll gather ideas, tricks of the trade, and resources, while enlarging your own network with colleagues from across the nation.
    • The newest and best! This year's technical exhibition will feature companies showcasing and demonstrating the latest in technology and the newest systems, services, and products specific to Volunteer Resource Professionals

This is an event you won't want to miss!    To register:  https://www.hospitalconnect.com/secure/ahvrp/ahvrp-conference.jsp

MADHVS Educational Meeting - October 6, 2008
PLACE: Mercy Hospital, Springfield
TOPIC: Integrating Staff and Volunteers
All sessions are generally scheduled to start registration at 9:15 and end at 2pm.

Integrating volunteers into the paid workforce of a facility is one of the biggest challenges Volunteer Managers face. Without help and guidance from volunteer management most placements would be doomed to failure. Why? Usually because no one has educated staff about who volunteers are, what they can (and cannot do), and how to build a relationship with them that will turn them into a long-lasting, dedicated volunteer for their department. Another challenge is education and building a relationship between the departments and the Volunteer Services staff so that they will no longer look upon you as a “quick-fix temp agency” that can pull a volunteer out of your filing cabinet for them at a moments notice.

We will discuss many different methods of staff education, the issues that need to be covered, and how Volunteer Managers can use this time to turn department staff into volunteer advocates and make their own jobs even easier!

Speaker:Eileen Pelletier, CAVS Volunteer Services Manager, Hartford Hospital

Volunteer Services Manager, Hartford Hospital Eileen Pelletier has served 12 years as Manager of Volunteer Services at Hartford Hospital. The program has a yearly average of 1,000 volunteers who contribute an average of 130,000 hours per year in over 200 roles throughout the facility.
